There’s an old expression in football (Soccer as it’s called in North America) that says “he shoots, he scores”, well guess what, there’s another expression that was heard loud and clear at the Vernon & Area 2017 55+ BC Games, “she shoots, she scores”!!! For the first time, Women’s Soccer was introduced at the 2017 Games.
As a result of requests from our membership, the BC Seniors Games Society added Women’s Soccer to our roster of over 30 other sports. At the Vernon & Area Games there was fierce competition between, the ‘Island Girls’ from Vancouver Island; the ‘Amazons’ from the Lower Mainland, and the ‘Okanagan Prime’ from the Interior. Congratulations must be given to the ‘Amazons’ for winning the Gold., to the ‘Okanagan Prime’ for winning the Silver and to the ‘Island Girls’ for winning the Bronze medals, what a great inaugural start we had, Women’s 55+ Soccer – definitely alive and kicking!!!
Women’s Soccer in the 55+ BC Games is played under different Rules than in the Men’s. Using a smaller field, a 7 players/side format, no offside rule and ‘on the fly substitutions’, the inaugural introduction proved to be very popular with the players and they all indicated they would be back for the Kimberley/Cranbrook Games. Comments from the Ladies include: “this is just the beginning for Women’s Soccer at the Games, we’re hoping for more Ladies to come out and play next year in Kimberley/Cranbrook”; “what a blast”; “never had so much fun”; we were super happy that we played!!

Our hope is that more Ladies, whether new to the Game, coming back to Soccer or have never left Soccer will don their cleats and join us in future Games.
